City of Ember

I am almost done reading The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. Today the 5th grade class went to see the movie. In the city of Ember, twelve-year-old Lina trades jobs on Assignment Day to be a Messenger to run to new places in her decaying but beloved city, perhaps even to glimpse Unknown Regions. It is the first book in the Books of Ember series. The series has 4 books so far: The city of Ember, The People of Sparks, The Prophet of Yonwood, and The Diamond of Darkhold.

What Did You Read Over the Summer?

I just finished reading Cicada Summer by Andrea Beatty. Did you know that Andrea Beatty lives in Naperville? This book is on the Battle of Books list this year. It's about a girl named Lily who lives in a small town in Illinois. Lily likes to read Nancy Drew books. She's in sixth grade and hasn't spoken in two years. Why? I can't tell you this. I can tell you that a new girl, Tinny, moves into town. Tinny is not so nice to Lily and discovers Lily's secret. But Lily discovers a mystery about Tinny also. Girls and boys will like this book - boys will relate to Lily's older brother Pete. One of my favorite parts in the book is when Pete and Lily create pirate ships and sail them! It's a quick read - 167 pages (the pages are small).
